About these worksheets
Hearing the first sound in a word is the first step of phonics, and these worksheets practise it three ways: circling the pictures that start with a given letter, drawing lines from letters to pictures, and writing the first letter of a word. Letters are chosen from the ones with the most picture words, so the sheets stay fair.
All worksheets are free for home and classroom use, print on one Letter or A4 page and come with an answer key. Every set is generated from the same word and number banks as our games, so "Make a new one" gives you unlimited practice.
Tips for parents & teachers
- Say each picture name out loud and exaggerate the first sound: "b-b-ball".
- Circle sheets have two right answers per row, so ask "are there any more?" before moving on.
- The "write the first letter" sheets are a good bridge to our missing letter worksheets.
