About these worksheets
Sink or float is often a child's very first experiment: make a guess, test it, and compare. We only use things that clearly do one or the other, and the older sheets include the surprises from our Sink or Float? game: a pumpkin floats, a potato sinks, and a tiny ring sinks while a big log floats. The experiment sheet only lists things that are safe to drop in a bowl of water at home.
All worksheets are free for home and classroom use, print on one Letter or A4 page and come with an answer key. Every set is generated from the same word and number banks as our games, so "Make a new one" gives you unlimited practice.
Tips for parents & teachers
- Ask "why do you think so?" before testing. A wrong guess is still good science.
- For the experiment sheet, a big mixing bowl or the bathtub works. Keep a towel handy!
- Talk about the big idea: being small does not make things float, and being big does not make them sink.
